There's a picture of Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, smiling and flipping off his computer with headphones on and a wineglass of redbull on his desk. This is the digital zen. Really it's the opposite of zen but still cathartic. With emotions placated by music, neural activity stimulated, and outward appearances managed you can lose yourself in code. At more introspective moments I wonder what problems in the natural world prepared the brain for programming. Pattern recognition must have developed for spotting prey. Symbolism and abstraction for explaining and collaborating. Scope and dependencies for planning. Still it seems like we overshot any requirement survival could throw at us, except maybe a cognitive arms race. Whatever lead up to this moment, we're here. The information's there for dissemination, the problems need solving, and we're equipped.
